Poggio al Tesoro has firmly established itself in Tuscany, a region renowned for its distinct terroir and exceptional climate. Founded in 2001 in the heart of Bolgheri, the winery emerged from a vision of exploring new frontiers, embracing the future with ambition and foresight. Today, Marilisa and her daughters, Caterina and Carlotta, carry forward this pioneering spirit, deeply respecting the environment. With dedication and pride, they lead a sustainable and forward-thinking venture that blends tradition with innovation. But let’s start from the very beginning!

2001

In 2001, ambition and audacity led Marilisa and her brother Walter to embark on a new challenge. After many discussions, they decided on one destination: Tuscany. As they explored the region, they fell in love with Bolgheri. The exceptional value of the area, combined with their experience, made the promise they made to each other a reality. That year, they purchased their first plot of 11 hectares, which stretched along the Strada delle Sondraie up to Fossa Camilla. Enchanted by the Strada Bolgherese and the diverse soils, they soon acquired a second 7-hectare farm that included the charming church of San Giuseppe. A third purchase followed: another 7-hectare plot with a vineyard planted in 1994 with Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. This already-established vineyard allowed them to accelerate production and study soil variations to match clones and varietals to each terrain. As nearby farmers sold their land, the Allegrini family further expanded their holdings in Bolgheri.

2002

The year of Poggio al Tesoro's foundation.

2003

In 2003, vineyard planting began, with careful selection of grape varietals and rootstocks based on the unique characteristics of Poggio al Tesoro’s soils. The estate was divided into parcels to optimize each sub-area. Sandy, fossil-rich soils were selected for vines like Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, known for their concentration and power, while Merlot was planted in clay-rich, mineral soils to express elegance, aromas, and harmony. The first small vintage from Via Bolgherese was also produced in 2003.

2014

From 2014, Poggio al Tesoro has adhered to a strict sustainability protocol. The goal is to respect the ecosystem and the vines' equilibrium, allowing the fruits to express their full potential in an uncontaminated environment. This sustainable approach extends to all agricultural practices, including the use of cover crops, selective pruning, and nocturnal harvesting, as well as optimizing energy and resource consumption both in the vineyard and the cellar. The low production per acre reflects the estate's focus on quality and respect for the balance of the land.

2022

In 2022, Poggio al Tesoro celebrated twenty years of operation, now owning 64 hectares across four areas around Bolgheri, with about 30 hectares dedicated to vineyards. This milestone marked a significant achievement in the winery’s ongoing evolution, driven by a philosophy focused on environmental protection, biodiversity, and soil care. Stringent sustainable methods continue to guide production processes from the vineyard to the cellar, with experimentation and an avant-garde approach remaining cornerstones of the winery's identity

ONCE UPON A TIME IN SAN POLO

2007 – The year it all began

Marilisa Allegrini purchased San Polo, and is today joined by her daughters Carlotta and Caterina. Her vision shaped Montalcino into a pioneering winemaking hub, blending innovation with the region's rich viticultural heritage.

2013
The winery achieved CasaClima Wine certification after successfully passing the verification protocol, which adheres to stringent criteria aimed at resource reduction and minimizing environmental impact. It became the first in Tuscany and the second globally to earn this sustainability certificate, following a comprehensive evaluation of various factors, such as waste management, the adoption of energy-efficient machinery, the utilization of local and recycled materials, sustainable logistics and mobility, resource consumption monitoring, initiatives to enhance life quality, and efficient production processes.

2014
San Polo initiates adherence to organic protocols in the vineyard following extensive research and experimentation. This decision was influenced by San Polo's inherent potential, demonstrating a clear commitment to excellence in the vineyards, enabling significant qualitative outcomes with minimal human interference.

2015
The process of "parcelling" the vineyards commences, methodically dividing the land into smaller plots, each with distinct characteristics. Variations in soil and climate facilitate the identification of various techniques for cultivating the land, maximizing the potential of each specific section of the vineyard.
The qualitative results were quickly apparent during the harvesting and winemaking stages, as well as directly observable in the bottles.

2017
San Polo attained organic certification. The company has consistently approached viticulture without chemicals, having embarked on an eco-sustainable journey as early as 2007. However, it was essential first to gain a comprehensive understanding of the terroir to ascertain whether the location and features of the vineyards could genuinely support organic practices.
